Installing Windows 7 on Mac Using Bootcamp: Step-by-Step Guide

Attention: The following Mac models no longer support Boot Camp: MacBook Air M1, 2020; MacBook Pro 13', M1, 2020; Mac mini M1, 2020; and iMac 24-inch, M1, 2021, along with any Apple device equipped with an M1 chip.

To determine the compatibility of Windows 7 with your Mac, perform these steps:

  1. Tap the Apple icon on the top menu.
  2. Go to About this Mac to review your device's specifications.
Note: On PCs with Intel chips, it lists Processor, whereas on Macs, it lists Chip.

Proceed with the following actions:

Verify software updates are current.

Reminder: Ensure all macOS updates are installed prior to setting up Windows.
  1. Login with administrator rights.
  2. Shut all active applications and log out other users.
  3. Navigate to Apple Menu > System Preferences.
  4. Select General from the sidebar.
  5. Choose Software Update on the right. (Scroll down if necessary).
  6. Apply all pending macOS updates.
Note: If a restart occurs post-update, re-access Software Update to install any remaining updates.

Prepare your Mac for the Windows setup

Boot Camp Assistant configures your device by creating a new partition named BOOTCAMP and downloading necessary Boot Camp support software.

Note: If using a laptop, plug it into a power source before continuing.
  1. Plug your USB into the Mac and launch Boot Camp Assistant found under Applications > Utilities.
  2. At the welcome screen, click Continue.
  3. Choose all the required options and press Continue.
  4. Select your previously downloaded Windows 7 .iso file and the USB drive for the install media.
  5. Adjust the desired space allocation for Windows by dragging the middle bar, then click Install.
  6. Note: You cannot modify the partition size afterwards.
  7. Your Mac will reboot to start the Windows 7 installation process.

Installing Boot Camp in Windows

Once Windows is running, installation of Mac-compatible Boot Camp drivers will commence.

  1. In Windows, open the Boot Camp installer and adhere to the prompts.
  2. Note: Avoid clicking the Cancel button during installation.
    Note: Disregard any warnings about the software failing the Windows logo test; proceed by clicking Continue.
    Note: Ignore transient installer dialogues unless they request software installation, in which case, select Install. Check for any hidden dialogues behind open windows if the process stalls.
  3. Complete the setup by selecting Finish.
  4. Upon rebooting, follow any prompts from newly appearing installation programs.
Note: Should the compatibility software not launch automatically, initiate a manual installation.
