How to Set Up Windows 10 on Your Mac Using Boot Camp

Important: The following Mac models do not support Boot Camp: MacBook Air M1, 2020 / MacBook Pro 13', M1, 2020 / Mac mini M1, 2020 / iMac 24-inch, M1, 2021. This includes all devices with the M1 chip from Apple.

To determine if your Mac supports Windows 10 installation, proceed as follows:

  1. Tap the Apple icon in the menu bar.
  2. Choose About this Mac to review your system specifications.
Important: On Macs with Intel processors, look for Processor information. On Macs with Apple chips, check the Chip details.

Follow these steps to prepare:

Ensure all macOS updates are installed.

Note: It is essential to update macOS before installing Windows via Boot Camp.
  1. Access the Apple menu at the top left of your screen and select System Preferences.
  2. Select Software Update.
  3. If your system is up to date, a confirmation message will appear.
Note: The system checks for updates automatically. Allow a few moments for the search to complete. If updates are found, select Update now and follow the instructions to download and install.
Note: If your Mac restarts post-update, reopen Software Update to install any remaining updates.

Prep your Mac for Windows.

Boot Camp Assistant will prepare your Mac by creating a new partition for Windows, named BOOTCAMP, and downloading necessary support software.

Note: If using a portable Mac, ensure it is connected to power before you start.
  1. Insert your USB drive into the Mac and use the spotlight search by typing Boot Camp.
  2. Navigate to Boot Camp Assistant under Applications > Utilities.
  3. On the introductory screen, select Continue.
  4. Choose all required options and click Continue.
  5. Pick the Windows 10 .iso file you downloaded and the USB drive to set up the installation media.
  6. Adjust the partition size by dragging the middle bar, then click Install.
  7. Note: The partition size can't be modified later.
  8. After this, your Mac will restart to begin installing Windows 10.

Install Boot Camp software on Windows

Once Windows installs, the installation of Boot Camp drivers for your Mac will commence.

  1. In the Boot Camp installer on Windows, comply with the on-screen instructions.
  2. Note: Avoid clicking the Cancel button during the installation process.
    Note: If an alert states that the software being installed has not passed the Windows logo test, select Continue.
    Note: Be alert to any installer dialog boxes that may appear. If a dialog box prompts you to install device software, select Install. Check for any hidden windows if nothing appears to be happening.
  3. When all installations are complete, click Finish.
  4. Once your device restarts, follow any further prompts from installation software that may appear.
